About Barcelona

Did you know that Barcelona is the most beautiful city in the World? You won?t find anybody who doesn?t like it. Gabriel García Márquez describes it as ?feminine?. Does a city really have gender? What Barcelona does have is a personality of its own. The city breathes, beats, it?s always moving, it shocks you. The first time you visit the city you leave with the urge of coming back. The second time, you want to move here and there?s never a third time because it becomes part of you. If you come to Barcelona, you?ll find the sea, always the sea, its mountains, parks, buildings, people? and you?ll want it all just for you because, you?ll be in love!

Moving around

To move around Barcelona the best option is public transport (subway, bus). A 10 ride ticket is the cheapest way to travel and you?ll get everywhere with it, from the airport to the city centre, from the city centre to the beach, from the beach to Montjuïc. If you?re looking for something unique, take a ride in the Funicular for the best sights of the city, hop on the touristic bus so you won?t miss any detail but, most important, do not miss your chance to walk around the old part of the city, you?ll be amazed.

Out & About

There?s no doubt that Barcelona will surprise you thanks to its charisma and personality. Let the city amaze you with all it has to offer such as its modernist buildings in Passeig de Gràcia where you?ll be able to discover some of the most interesting buildings of the world famous architect Antoni Gaudi. Take a walk along the Ramblas, one of the most original avenues there are, let yourself get lost in its atmosphere and get to the sea, the door of Barcelona or get lost in the Barri Gòtic with its thousands of years of history watching you. All this without missing the world famous Sagrada Familia and immerse yourself in Gaudi?s magical world. You can also get lost in the mountain of Montjuïc which offers you countless possibilities such as a panoramic view of Barcelona. It?s a thousand-year-old city offering all kinds of treasures for you to enjoy such as the church Santa María del Mar and the Born, the neighbourhood that surrounds the church and that will get to you.

What's going on in

One of the highlighted dates of the city is the 24th of September, when the fiesta mayor de la Mercè takes place. During those days, the entire city gets ready to party and you can enjoy Gigantes y Cabezudos parades (where people walk around dressed up with a giant head), castellers (human built towers) and the typical dance of the region, Sardanas. Furthermore, the highlight are the Correfocs, a parade of people (usually dressed up as demons) surrounded by fireworks and the Piromusical when the fountains of Montjuïc get coloured and dance to the rhythm of the music. Other fiesta that you can?t miss is the Fiesta Mayor de Gràcia which takes place in mid august in Gràcia neighbourhood. The inhabitants of this neighbourhood decorate its streets in order to get prize of the most beautiful street. During these fiestas, you can also enjoy summer terraces and live music shows.

Shopping

There?s something about Barcelona: the city can fancy itself as being the perfect place for shopping with its great variety of shops and commercial areas which will suit all tastes and budgets. You can find any international designer as well as the latest in fashion for the young. There?s also a wide offer of traditional and original craftwork. Let the Ciudad Condal amaze you!

What's cooking?

In Barcelona, we love to eat well. During summer, there?s nothing better than delicious paella by the seafront. If you come during some other time of the year, you?ll be able to enjoy a good costellada or butifarra amb seques. In February, the typical dish is calçotada, in March, bunyols, in April, arròs and always, always, always, pà amb tomàquet i pernil (did you know that is the food of the gods of Olympus?). Here, we love to treat ourselves with delicious food!

Weather

Barcelona enjoys the Mediterranean climate common of its location. You?ll enjoy many sunny days all year long and the temperature is generally mild. Winters are warm and quite damp while summers are hot and dry. It doesn?t rain much but, when it does, it?s heavily, normally during spring and autumn.

Practical information

Barcelona, capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia, is, after Madrid, the second biggest city of Spain. It?s part of the European Union and the currency is the Euro since January 1999, when the Eurozone was established. EU citizens don?t need a visa, passport or any medical exam to enter the country, all you need is an ID card to enjoy the country for three months.

So...

There are many reasons to let you get carried away by this unique and different city. Barcelona offers history and modernity, tradition and design. It has a personality of its own and there are countless reasons to come visit it. It?s open to the world, a meeting point for cultures. It?s a dynamic city in constant movement and it will never disappoint you. Come discover all its treasures and you?ll be amazed. Barcelona offers the perfect union between mountain and see, it?s a Mediterranean city that welcomes each and everyone who comes to know it. You have plenty of reasons to love her so don?t let her slip away.
