About Peñiscola

Peñíscola is also known as the City in the Sea. The typical image of the city is the fortress that crowns the rock that goes into the sea, the Papa Luna Castle, built by the Templars on an old Arab mosque. At the foot of the castle lie the most famous and best equipped beaches in the city.

Moving around

Peñíscola is not too big so, once you're here, the best you can do to get to know it is to walk around its streets and beaches.

Out & About

At the foot of the castle it extends the over three kilometers of fine golden sand that make up the Playa del Norte that has all the equipment for leisure and great conditions of quality reflected in the Blue Flag that it has obtained. If this is joined by the ideal climatic characteristics of the area, Peñíscola becomes the perfect place for your holidays. There are other beaches like Playa Sur with its calm waters thanks to the pier, the Playa de las Viudas, the Playas de Pebret or the numerous coves that lie near Peñíscola. It's also known as the City in the Sea and it's crowned at the top of the rock that goes into the sea by the Castillo del Papa Luna, a fortress built by the Templars and surrounded by a series of walls protecting the old part of town. The Portal Fosc is of Renaissance style and it was the main entrance to the fort. Behind it, you will find nice corners where you can lose yourself and enjoy the special atmosphere. The other two gates are Sant Pere and Santa Maria. Inside the wall, you'll find the Plaza de les Escaseres, a quiet place where you can relax like you've transported to another era.

What's going on in

The patron saint of Peñíscola is the Virgin Ermitaña and, as tradition says, there are festivities held in her honor. During the days that the celebrations last, all kinds of acts and shows are held such as traditional dances, amateur bullfighting with young bulls or Moors and Christians parades. From the 25th to 27th February, the carnival in Peñíscola is celebrated. During those days, the streets are filled with color and music in one of the most massive celebrations of the year. La noche de San Juan, the summer solstice, is one of the key nights of the calendar of the city. Bonfires are lit on the beach, there are fireworks and music so you can't stop dancing. It's a tradition to swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean at midnight.

Shopping

Throughout the old town you'll find traditional shops where you can buy all sorts of memorabilia and original objects.

What's cooking?

The cuisine in Peñíscola is typical Mediterranean and the main dishes are all i pebre, the suquet of fish or cañaillas, sea snails. For dessert, the delicious pastissets de Carabassa, little pumpkin cakes, are a delicacy not to be missed.

Weather

Peñíscola enjoys the magnificent Mediterranean climate. The winters are mild and summers are hot but nice, perfect to fully enjoy the beach.

So...

Peñíscola is the ideal destination for a perfect beach getaway combined with a little history as you walk through the narrow streets that once roamed the Templars.
