About Málaga

Passion. Art. Genius. Joy. A unique blend that makes Malaga a magical city. It lies on the shores of the Mediterranean protected by a mountain range and it has become the tourism capital of the Costa del Sol thanks to the sun that allows you to enjoy the beach, the wide avenues where to take a walk, its squares... And not only that. The character of its people will captivate you.

Moving around

Many city streets are for pedestrians and many others are narrow and winding so the best choice is to walk but the bus also allows you to reach more remote places of the city.

Out & About

Malaga can brag about offering many different attractions to the visitors. In the Buenavista Palace you'll find the Picasso Museum of Malaga which has a permanent collection of more than 200 works of the genius. The Merced Square is one of the biggest of the city and in it you'll find the Picasso Birth Place. The square also functions as a meeting point for local people. Even if you aren't a lover of bulls, the bullring Malagueta is also worth a visit thanks to its elegant neo-Mudejar style. Larios Street is one of the main streets of the city and it ends at the Constitución Square, heart of the historic city centre. The cathedral is built on the remains of what once was the main mosque of the city. It's popularly known as the manquita because one of the two towers remained unfinished. The Alcazaba was the palace of the Muslim rulers and it's one of the most important monuments of the city. At his feet is the Roman theater. Furthermore, Malaga is perfect to enjoy the beach, both the ones in the city and others of nearby villages. One of the best beaches in the city is the Malagueta, which has earned the Blue Flag distinctive. Other attractions you can visit are the Encarnación Cathedral, the Puerta Oscura Gardens, Malaga Park, the Provincial Museum of Arts, Mount Gibralfaro...

What's going on in

One of the most important events in the city is the opening of the Fair with a fireworks display. In the Real de la Feria, you can enjoy live music, dance and taste the rich wines to accompany some delicious tapas. Moreover, as in the rest of Andalusia, other traditional festivals that are celebrated are Easter or the Cruces de Mayo.

Shopping

Many of the streets of the historic center are for pedestrians so shopping in this area is very comfortable. Also, you can enjoy history while you stroll among more than a thousand shops. Larios Street is one of the main arteries for shopping and on the streets of Carretería or Alamos you can find the typical flamenco dresses.

What's cooking?

One of the delicacies that you cannot miss in Malaga is the fried pescaito (fish). Grilled sardines are also very typical cooked by the fire impaled on poles. Another delicacy thanks to the mixture of sweet and bitter tastes is the eggplant with honey. There's nothing better to accompany these dishes than a delicious local wine.

Weather

The climate of Malaga is nice thanks to the regulating effect of the sea so any time of year you can enjoy the pleasant temperatures. Winters are mild and summers are pretty hot.

Practical information

If you want to visit the Alcazaba, you can do so on Sundays from 14h because the admission is free.
