The old town was once surrounded by medieval walls, some parts of it still remain. It's the perfect location for walking. Within the walls, you'll find churches, theaters, squares and labyrinthine streets. This area has maintained the old medieval appearance and it also preserves its charm. Another great place to go is the promenade where, in the mornings, you can watch the fishermen unload their catch in the old port. The Basilica of San Nicola is the symbol of the city of Bari and, together with its square, is the heart of Old Town. It's said that the basilica was built to house the remains of St. Nicholas, aka Santa Claus. Another symbol of the city is the Petruzzelli theater.

The Fiera del Levante is held every year in September, near the new port.

In May, the Festival of the Passage of the Relics is celebrated, a huge folk and religious festival which depicts the story of St. Nicholas; people dress up in medieval clothes.

Each year in June, a festival of Mediterranean music takes place.
